Mapping the Maximum City, 18-28 February 2012

The Freemap Studio 2012 will be held for ONE WEEK from 18 to 25 February at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mankhurd and CAMP (Critical Arts and Media Practice) in Khar.

We will conduct open-door workshops for do-it-yourself (DIY) aerial and transport mapping in Mumbai. We also provide training in web mapping and georeferencing scanned and hand-drawn maps using tools like OpenStreetMap, Walking Papers and Map Warper.

This experiment in hands-on studio-based learning will be led by members of MetaStudio and Gnowledge Lab, CAMP, BusRoutes.In, Groundtruth Initiative, and ChaloBEST.

SATURDAY 18 Feb @ HBCSE: Meeting & Planning

11am to 7pm at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education

  • Led by Jude Terence D'Souza, G. Nagarjuna and Shekhar Krishnan
  • General meeting to plan activities for coming week's Freemap Studio at HBCSE and CAMP
  • Unbox the ArduCopter 3DR, explore its software and hardware interfaces, and develop a service to download and georeference aerial imagery from the balloons/kites and quadrocopter.
  • Discuss web development strategy for ChaloBEST with BusRoutes.In and plan mapping exercises
    * 1100 Unbox the ArduCopter 3DR, Read manuals
    * 1200 Explore its software and hardware interfaces
    * 1300 Long Refueling
    * 1330 Assembly. Keeping in mind details required for replicating locally
    * 1600 Short refueling
    * 1615 Plan and develop a service to download and georeference aerial imagery from the balloons/kites and quadrocopter.

SUNDAY 19 Feb @ BarCamp Mumbai

MONDAY 20 Feb @ HBCSE: Freemap Server Setup and Quadrocopter Assembly

11am to 7pm at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, led by Jude Terence D'Souza, Schuyler Erle, Mikel Maron

  • Follow requirements for Cartonama Workshop
  • Install TileMill, OSM instance, other FOSS GEO tools on new Freemap server
  • India tileserver with an assortment of tiles in indic languages and different stylesheets
  • India openstreetmap extracts for different regions update daily from geofabrik
  • Precompiled gpsmid midlets for different regions
  • WMS service of rectified maps from http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/india/
  • Process Mumbai Freemap unwarped shape and warped png exports into OpenLayers/Freemap instance
  • Hack on simple osm poi adding tool (yuvipanda)
  • Arducopter Setup
   * 1100 Continue assembly
   * 1200 Rig up chargers, including one for charging from vehicle
   * 1300 Long Refueling
   * 1330 Test onboard telemetery
   * 1600 Short refueling
   * 1615 Test flights tethered indoors

TUESDAY 21 Feb @ CAMP: Bandra Neighbourhood Mapping Party

Meet from 2pm to 6pm at CAMP

  • Led by Mikel Maron and Arun Ganesh and CAMP
  • Mapping of Chuim Village, Danpada and the areas around Carter Road in Bandra West and Khar West.
  • We will trace and tag all major features such as buildings, roads, coastlines and major infrastructure and institutions.
  • Take GPS tracks and points and upload them to OSM
  • Print, draw by hand and scan maps with Walking Papers and new version Field Papers
  • See Mapping Party How-To for instructions.

WEDNESDAY 22 Feb @ HBCSE: BEST Bus Stop Mapping Sprint and Quadrocopter Test Flight

2pm to 5pm at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education

  • Led by ChaloBEST and BusRoutes.In teams and volunteers
  • Sprint to map all BEST bus stops in Greater Mumbai using ChaloBEST admin and volunteers who select routes and areas to complete.

  • Discussion about generating BEST route and road lines and area polygons.
  • OSM export of BEST bus network using OSMosis and following the OSM Public Transport Schema

THURSDAY 23 Feb @ CAMP: Public Transit Studio I

2pm to 5pm at CAMP

  • Led by Yuvi Panda and Sanjay Bhangar.
  • Finalise GTFS and OSM exports from ChaloBEST django admin database
  • Explore BusRoutes.In experience and current django admin
  • Test and provide feedback on Android and J2ME apps Mobile Dev

FRIDAY 24 Feb @ HBCSE: Public Transit Studio II

2pm to 5pm at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education

  • Led by G. Nagarjuna, Amit Dhakulkar and Jude Terence D'Souza
  • Install and Setup OpenTripPlanner for Mumbai
  • Create graphs for stop networks using GraphBuilder and GraphStructure to configure OTP
  • Test launch and imaging from the ArduCopter and uploading of tiled aerial imagery to Mumbai Freemap and OpenAerialMap community servers

SATURDAY 25 Feb @ CAMP: Final Workshop and Party

2pm to 5pm at CAMP

  • Meet and sum up our work on aerial imaging and transport mapping.
  • Test flights and bus rides to test and report on our progress.
  • Review and launch of ChaloBEST public beta GTFS feed and smartphone apps.
  • Evening party and hacker bhojan/mehfil on CAMP rooftop
