User Testing | Application
To test 40 participants with different background (see Target Audience).
This testing plan aims to test the DuoBud app from the guest side. DuoBud app aims for helping the new to country people such as new immigrants and international students. In this testing round, the guest will be using this application to reach the information provided by the host, the information includes the hosts' life experience or the hidden place sharing that could assimilate the new immigrants more get used to Australian local life.
Prepare devices, and seating for participant. Any other materials that will allow participant to feel more comfortable may also be prepared, e.g. food, water, cursor (instead of using trackpad for laptop). Organise testers in positions that do not seem intimidating or make participant feel uncomfortable. Do not let participant to see questionnaire until it is time to do so (see Questionnaire).
Testers should begin to introduce themselves to the participant. If possible, make them feel comfortable by holding small conversation. Give high level idea of what they will be doing in their tasks, i.e. will require participant to use Audacity and complete simple activities. Consent is voluntary - you do not have to participate if you do not want to. If you wish to continue, you may sign the form.
Ask participant to read, fill in, and sign consent form. Make sure they understand and if they have any questions, testers may ask. Once they have finished, testers are also required to sign.
Give participant more detailed instructions about the task they are to do (i.e. find, download, and use Audacity). Tell them how long you’ll give them to work on the task. Ask them to think out loud or to make comments as they work. See if there are any questions from participants before you get started, and answer questions.
When the participant is ready, ask to start on the tasks
- Log in and fill in the details as a guest
- Using the navigation, go to the chat page and try to communicate with a host
- Navigate to the map page to see some nearby locations
- Check your friend list
- Add a new host
- Edit your profile
Testers take handwritten notes as participant works, in accordance to role arrangements made. Record the user’s operations and count time by stopwatch under their permission of recording. Observe the user’s first interacting with the application. During the process, see if they have any hesitate or work back and forwards. If participant is quiet, ask “what are you thinking now?” or “what are you planning to do?”, etc. When time is up say, “great - we now have the information we need for that part of our session”.
Ask participant to answer out our questionnaire. Clarify any points if required. When participant is finished, tester must check over responses to make sure all parts have been filled out, answers are legible and related to subject.
- Were there any areas that confused you? If yes, explain how this may be fixed.
- If there was a tutorial, would you prefer having a chat that will take you on a tour or purely instructional? Suggest some other ways to display a tutorial.
- Is it necessary to have two log in processes to distinguish between a guest and a host?
- Should social media be attached to a user?
- Is there any additional information you would like to have in order to help a host know more about you?
- Considering the fact that you may communicate with people using a second language, how may we alert users of a user's language abilities?
- In a conversation, what are some interactive elements we should include?
- How is the interaction with the map?
- How can we design it for better understanding, especially for a first time user?
- We are thinking of using AR to create pit stops that may alert a user to view hidden tips when reaching a popular tourist destination. Do you think this is a good idea?
- What sort of hidden tips can you think of or like to have?
- Finding a host: would you prefer this on the contact page or on the chat list page? Which do you prefer and why?
- This application is particularly for immigrants who are staying long term. Are there any elements that we should focus on to make this application focused towards our target audience?
- Are there any additional suggestions?
- Should the application be available in other languages other than English? If yes, list main languages.
- Which colour palette do you prefer?
- Do you feel our logo is representative of two users conversing?
Ask any further questions or do any further interactions you might have planned
Tell participant that the session is at an end. To iterate, all data collected is confidential and your data will be kept using a participant ID rather than a name. It will also not be used for any other purpose that has not been mentioned. Ask for final confirmation and thank participant for their time, and tell them that their data is valuable.
