Overview

The recommended way of interacting with BellHouse for most users is to use the BellHouseServer virtual machine on your desktop or laptop. This will allow you to configure the bells, sample video and play back recordings. The virtual machine works on both Mac and Windows and is relatively quick and easy to set up. This page gives instructions on how to set up the virtual machine and run bellhouse on your computer.

Requirements

  1. You'll need the bellhouse server usb stick (ask Joc or Seth)

Install VirtualBox

This allows you to run the bellhouse server virtual machine on your computer

  1. Plug the usb stick into your machine, and double-click the virtual box installer. For Mac, choose VirtualBox-5.1.22-115126-OSX.dmg. For windows, choose VirtualBox-5.1.22-115126-Win.exe
  2. Follow the prompts, accepting all the defaults. You'll also probably have to enter your password to complete the installation

Import the Bellhouse Virtual Machine

  1. Go back to the usb stick, and double-click the BellhouseServer.ova. VirtualBox should begin importing the virtual machine. This will probably take a few minutes (If this didn't work, try going to File > Import Appliance and import the BellhouseServer.ova file on the usb stick)
  2. Once the virtual machine has finished importing, you can eject the usb drive

Starting the Bellhouse Virtual Machine

  1. To start the virtual machine, make sure the VirtualBox application is running.
  2. Next, click the green Start button from within the VirtualBox application under 'BellHouseServer'. The virtual machine may take a few minutes to start up. When the bellhouse server is ready you should see the 'bellhouse-server login:' prompt.
  3. Open your favourite browser (e.g. Chrome) and go to http://localhost:3333
  4. You should see the main bellhouse sampling page (click on Setup to configure the bells)

Stopping the Bellhouse Virtual Machine

  1. From the VirtualBox application, right-click on the Bellhouse Server, go to Close > Save State
  2. Alternatively, you can go to Close > Power Off (but it will take longer to resume Bellhouse)
  3. You can now safely close the VirtualBox application

Troubleshooting

  1. If you're having problems with Bellhouse, don't worry, there is no way the virtual machine can do any harm to the Pi Bellhouse Server. Try the following:
  • Close and re-open your browser, then go to http://localhost:3333 again
  • Reset the Virtual Machine (Close > Reset)
  • Contact Roop or Pablo
