Prerequisite GitHub Account Settings

To ensure the security of users, projects, and the department, we require all users to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Registering for 2FA would eventually be compulsory for all users, given GitHub's announcement on March 13th, 2023. Our policy of 2FA will take effect beginning Fall 2023.

Note that this requires you to download an authenticator app, like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or other. The procedure is straightforward, and a helpful guide can be found on GitHub's official webpage.

GitHub offers multiple 2FA methods, as described in the aforementioned documentation. Among the available options, we recommend using an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, to verify login activities. We provide a brief overview of this process below:

Step 1: Login

Login into your GitHub Account

Step 2: Go to Your Profile

Click on your Profile icon (upper right corner): Step 2

Step 3: Select Settings

Click on ‘Settings’ from the drop-down menu

Step 4: Select Password and Authentication

Click on "Password and authentication" on the left panel of your settings page

Step 5: Enable Two Factor Authentication

Now, under the “Two-Factor Authentication” section, click on “Enable Two-Factor Authentication” and follow the instructions thereafter. You can choose any of the available options for two-factor authentication (e.g. SMS/Text Message, as shown below).

You are done!

Recommended: Log out and log back in to verify that you have set up everything correctly. If you follow steps 1-4 again, you should see that 2FA is correctly enabled.
