Conversions and Key Events

Conversions are now referred to as "Key Events". An event that measures a specific action (key actions website users take) that's essential to your organization's performance is called a Key Event.

Why are conversions being renamed as key events?

(Note: This new update is now only available to some Google Analytics properties and subproperties and Google is rollout this change Gradually)

  • In Google Analytics, you can choose important events for your organization and mark them as conversions.
  • Google Ads also uses the term "conversions" to refer to conversion data that is processed and measured differently than Analytics conversions.
  • The term "conversion" will now refer to the same item in all Google Analytics and Ads reports to avoid confusion and improve report consistency across all the Google products.

Difference between conversions and key events

  • A key event is an event that you define to be important to your organization.
  • Conversions allow you to track the performance of your ads and optimize campaigns using Google Analytics events. [Not Applicable for DAP Events]

Key event configuration

In DAP GA4 Property, we have marked the following events as Key Events.

  • file_download
  • email_click
  • telephone_click
  • dap_event
  • video_complete

You can navigate to GA4 Admin -> Data Display to see all the key events.

Key event reporting

In GA4 Standard/Custom Reports, the number of times users on your website initiated key events is shown in the Key Events metric column. You can choose the All events option to select a specific key event and check the number of times people triggered that key event. (Screenshot attached below)
