The project was named vispy!
Our project needs a name. Selecting a name is often a time-consuming process because four people will never all like the same name at the same time. To speed this up, I suggest we use these criteria for choosing a name, in order of importance:
- The name is not similar to any trademarked software (required).
- The name is not already in use as a python module (required).
- There are no (significant) similar projects of the same name (highly recommended).
- projectname.org is available (highly recommended).
- The project must be easy to find on google (recommended).
- The name is not too long and can be pronounced (preferred).
- The name is appealing.
Please add possible names here with a list of search hits, and vote on other names with your initials.
pyvis
- Current name, nice and short
- Clashes:
- http://pyvis.sourceforge.net/ [LC: I think this makes the name unusable for us]
- some crappy website: http://pyv.is/ (this is redirected from pyvis.org)
- a bunch of small github projects
vispy [AK] [LC]
- Motivation: this name fits the numpy / scipy naming scheme
- vispy.org is available
- Clashes:
- http://code.google.com/p/vispy/ Small project used in education, inactive for almost three years. It is not an actual package. Owners have been contacted and they have no problem with us using the name.
- https://github.com/MatzeB/vispy, very small project, inactive for three years
vipy [CR] [LC]
- https://github.com/johndgiese/vipy Small but recent project related to vim. Appears to be a plugin, probably won't cause package name conflicts?
- vipy.org is available
vizpy [CR] [LC]
- vizpy.org is available
pyvisual [LC]
- Name does not exist in the internets
- pyvisual.org is available
