Wrong hour chime played

Wesley Branton edited this page Nov 18, 2024 · 4 revisions

In some cases, users have reported issues where the add-on plays a chime at the top of the hour, but it is not playing the chime for the correct hour. This is usually an indication that the add-on is not able to detect the correct timezone.

Check your system settings

Often times this issue is a result of a misconfigured time on your computer. Check your operating system's time settings to make sure that the correct timezone and time are entered. Also, make sure that the daylight savings time settings are correctly configured. If your operating system provides the option to automatically detect your time or timezone, you may need manually set that information.

Your operating system's support website will have more information on how to change these settings. These steps will vary by operating system and version.

Manually change your timezone

In version 2.0 of the Grandfather Clock add-on, a timezone setting was added to the add-on to help users fix timezone issues. By default, this setting will be set to "Use System Settings". If the timezone is not being detected correctly, you can manually change your timezone to any of the areas provided in the drop-down menu for that setting.

Firefox advanced privacy settings

NOTE: This section only applies to Firefox users.

Firefox provides some functionality to prevent a practice called "Browser Fingerprinting". This is when websites attempt to collect enough information about your system (browser, timezone, language, screen size, etc) to be able to uniquely identify you from other users of that website.

The advanced privacy.resistFingerprinting option that can be found on Firefox's about:config page prevents the add-on from properly detecting your timezone, which will cause the incorrect chime to play. Currently, the only way to prevent this is to disable this setting by following these steps:

  1. Enter about:config in the Firefox address bar.
  2. Bypass the security warning (if necessary).
  3. Change the privacy.resistFingerprinting preference value to false.
  4. Restart Firefox.

When Firefox restarts, the Grandfather Clock add-on should be able to detect the correct timezone.

IMPORTANT: Disabling the fingerprinting protection in Firefox may compromise your privacy online. This should only be done if you are willing to accept the risks.
