Orientation: Vision
The following vision is open-source and can be forked at anytime, the reason why I wrote this in the wiki is so I can direct new members to it, and so everyone understands where I'm coming from. If you want to write out your own vision statements please do and we can consolidate them at some point in the future. - Cam
Decentral (now DCTRL) has always been to me, ideally, an autonomous entity in itself, AKA a DAO or Decentralized Autonomous Organization. Another way to look at it is, an organization that has its administration and backend automated so it can be more efficient, transparent and incorruptible by human influence. Decentral sends out contracts to us as autonomous agents to help maintain and supply it, so it can continue to exist e.g. refill the pepsi machine or clean the toilet. There are several varieties of potential DAO's but In this case the Decentral DAO is a community / commons-centric layer, that stands to benefit our community as a whole, and is ideally scalable to accommodate other open-source spaces.
It's important to understand that DAO's would not currently be possible without the invention of Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology in 2009. I would argue it's one of the most significant inventions in the civilized world, akin to the alphabet, movable type printing press, and the automobile. If you're unsure of why it's so significant you can check out this, and if you have questions feel free to ask one of us.
It's very similar to an 'Open Value Network' model that Sensorica in Montreal has pioneered. The only main differences is that they're an open hardware space and they're not using crypto, although now they're migrating to Ethereum.
Although we are all friends and have natural trust between us, we should pretend that we don't know or trust each other. The main reason for this is that when we have a working automated governance model for our space, we can try to scale it to multiple spaces, and after that a neighborhood, and maybe eventually even a municipality. This Decentral DAO would be a decentralized commons that replaces much of the inefficient bureaucracy of legacy government with autonomous code that can be reviewed and audited, copy and pasted by anyone. This also means our working open-source model for decentralized governance can be utilized in places where corruption is heavy. Decentral "Nodes" (community spaces) could pop up anywhere in the world and help transition their local communities onto a crypto/DAO infrastructure for the 21st Century.
Does this vision seem very idealistic and grandiose? That's because it is, but our entire civilization has been built from imagination, ideas & fiction, so don't knock it till you try it. ;P
This is the global Decentral website I made back in March 2014, which was the original inspiration for starting Decentral in Vancouver. http://decentral.network
