Speakers

Here is the criteria which I used for speaker selection:

  • It should have small size because this is a boombox project.
  • Because of the same size restrictions the speakers should be full range. Using separate speakers for low, middle and high frequencies would require too big case. Also Amp+/Amp2 has only two outputs for standard stereo speakers.
  • Another criteria was speaker wattage. Amp+/Amp2 can output 25W therefore the speakers should be in the same power range.
  • And finally as I was going to use black acrylic glass for front and back panels the speakers should be also in dark colors and preferably with black grill which could protect speakers' membranes from dust and accidental damages.

The speaker which passed these filtering criteria was car speaker Sony XS-GTF1027. The size of these speakers is 4". That is good enough for the boombox project. The frequency range is 60-24,000 Hz which is also great for boombox when you don't expect very low bass from such a small case. The speaker impedance 4 Ohm and 30W power suits perfectly for Amp+/Amp2 output. And finally they have pretty attractive black grills.

The high frequencies are provided by the separate twitter sitting in the center of the speaker. Each speaker can be easily mounted on case with four screws which come with speaker.

sp-2

The speaker and grill are attached to the body by the same screws.

While connecting speakers to Amp+/Amp2 remember that the signal has polarity (+ and -). Therefore positive and negative pins on the speakers should be connected to the corresponding signals on the Amp+/Amp2 module.
